The Peninsula
of La Caravelle (Presqu’île de la Caravelle)
with 15 km long and 900 m large is pointing in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Peninsula of La Caravelle is one of the vestiges of the old arc
(îlot of La Caravelle),
first volcanic stage of construction of Martinique (with the îlot
of Saint Anne) 18 million years ago. The Peninsula of La Caravelle
clearly separates the Atlantic northern coast and the Atlantic southern
coast. It marks also a change of the nature of the funds. A line of
fringing reefs follows the coast since the point of La Caravelle until
the extreme south of the island approaching the coast until being
based with it. These remainders of coasts constitute a major danger
to navigation.
The end of the Peninsula of La Caravelle is a protected natural site
managed by the Parc Naturel Régional
de la Martinique. It is classified as natural reserve
for its geology, its fauna, its flora like its history.
On this site are located the ruins of legendary Château Dubuc,
old den of pirates, flibustiers, traffickers of slaves and goods.

Natural
Reserve
Two paths traced by the ONF (Office National des Forêts) furrow
the Natural Reserve of the Peninsula of La Caravelle and offer several
points of view on the peninsula. they make it possible to discover
the multiple landscapes of the reserve: dry forest, rock coast, white
sand and mangrove. The small path (1h30) explores the dry forest and
the mangrove using wood runways. The long path (3h30) prolongs the
small path to join the end of the peninsula, it allows the discovery
of remarkable geological sites: Labradorite organ, petrified sources
...
